University of Waterloo Environment 3

Expansion of the Environment 3 building at the University of Waterloo exemplifies the shift toward sustainable development.

The LEED platinum addition to the Environment building located just off the ring road of the U of W campus incorporates numerous environmental features, including a 465 m2 green roof, a bioswale, native and adaptive plantings, permeable paving, a constructed wetland, a cistern for grey water collection and re-use and multiple outdoor amenity areas, including a teaching circle, bioswale and two interior garden courts. Existing vegetation was incorporated into the final designs.

Brodie & Associates assisted with a student competition to provide additional teaching opportunities for this faculty whose key focus is environmental design. Student input was incorporated into the final design where feasible to provide meaning for the students who participated.
